In this series of blog posts we are introducing people who are speaking at and attending Inspire 2013. We are delighted to introduce Brian Friedman, owner of BFREED PHOTO in NYC. Brian will be teaching on Don't (just) Shoot Weddings

Lots and lots of people come up to me and ask “Brian, how the heck are you getting to photograph all these concerts and celebrities in addition to your weddings?” It’s this very question that has motivated me to put together a presentation to help the photographers in our community better understand how to go about photographing subject areas other than weddings. For me, it’s primarily music that I’m interested in shooting. For others it might be food, landscape, product, sports etc. It really makes no difference what area it is - the philosophy overall is the same and learning the correct approach is monumentally important in building the relationships that will gain you access to the jobs you want. And while I do believe in specializing in one area (ie just weddings or just music), I also believe that shooting the same type of assignment over and over can get boring and may in fact burn you out over time. This is why I dedicate so much time to finding other assignments that excite me and keep me interested throughout the entire year.

My talk will focus on teaching the right (and wrong) way of getting the assignments you want even if you’ve never shot them before. I will talk about how to build strong relationships with people and how to maintain them which is the key to opening the doors you want opened. As well I’ll point out the ways you can easily destroy those relationships in one simple tweet. We will go through a step-by-step process of discovering what you want to shoot and why you want to shoot it, as well as setting realistic expectations over the course of a year. I will detail the steps I took to get to the clients I always dreamed of having in the entertainment industry and illustrate just how the right approach can make all the difference. Note that NO WEDDING PHOTOS will be shown in my presentation!

So if you’ve been saying to yourself “I really wish I shot ____ in addition to weddings,” this is the class for you!
