Earlier this year I saw the Francesca Woodman retrospective at the SFMOMA. It was profound and resonant. Woodman's body of work is largely self portraits. Beautiful, haunting, and mysterious. It’s nearly impossible to try to understand the photographs without the artist's life story, The details of her personal life refocus how one looks at the work.
If you don’t know her story - hold off for a moment, don't give into temptation of the immediate reveal. Look at her images. Really see them.
