In this series of blog posts we are introducing people who are speaking at Inspire 2015 and having them write a blog post so you can get to know them before Inspire. Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Drago-Price of Editor's Edge who will be leading a Weds afternoon session Editor's Edge: Portfolio and Website Mistakes Revealed
I’ve got 3 jobs, 2 kids and 1 amazing husband...
I worked full time for a good portion of my career forming and leading the photography department of BRIDES magazine…13 years to be exact. When I left the corporate tower of Conde Nast my husband said something that I will never forget. “Congratulations you graduated!” Being a high school history teacher he went on to say, “You spent as much time at BRIDES as you did in school K-12.” He was right it was time for me to “back pack through Europe” and find myself again.
Going full time in a fashionable office to freelance from home is a pretty interesting transition. “I can do what ever I want and wear yoga pants all day!” was my first reaction. But there is also a fast learning curve about yourself and how you work. I quickly realized I did so well in magazines because there are deadlines and if you don’t have them you will spend all day on Facebook… I also realized that there are certain things you take for granted when working for a corporation….like having an assistant and tech support and padded envelopes as your disposal…
I’ve got 3 jobs; Freelance Photo Editor, Photographer Consultant/Speaker and Wedding Photographer…what can I say I am a multi-tasker. I’ll be honest for the most part I try to only do 2 jobs at one time. But when opportunity knocks you need to take it and this summer I was doing all 3 jobs at once. From mid-May to the end of August I was the Interim Photo Director at Architectural Digest back at the old Conde Nast homestead. This also just happen to coincide with my biggest shooting season ever, a trip to speak at a conference in Colorado and long distance road-trip for a family reunion. Oh and did I mention I have 2 kids; a 6 year old boy and a 3 year old diva girl. Luckily that amazing husband has summer’s off and played Daddy daycare..lovingly sending me photo from the beach..while I sat inside in industrial air conditioning or spent 10 hours on my feet shooting a wedding.
There was one week I was at a conference Sunday-Wednesday, Thursday my son was off from school, Friday I shot a particularly difficult wedding, Saturday an over the top BatMizvah, and Monday back to the magazine…. Yeah it was pretty insane and I’ll admit there were a lot of margartitas this summer. But with freelance comes freedom and I’ll take 3 part time jobs over 1 full time any day!
